Why Filter ? simple sample for GND, RGND and ND filters

after long rest for Landscape photography, went for another quick long exposure, sunset and Milky Way shooting at Batu Pahat …  and here few simple sample

– all picture use AV mode meter at same position

– just contrast , saturation add to each picture

1.without any filter

– obviously the top-right over expose without any filter use

without any filter

2. use most standard GND filter than we recommended for here GND .9s

– sky exposure seem better after the GND  even with little highlight

with GND .9s only

3. use RGND 2 stops

– the exposure seem more balance without highlight due to light concentrate on center of the frame

with RGND 2 stops

4. with RGND and 10 stops ND filters

– ND 10 stops to make the shutter speed much slower create different slow shutter effect (silky effect for this) . the calm and peace feel make the picture look different from the standard capture

with RGND 2 stops and ND 10 stops

Overall the GND/RGND is to balance the sky exposure with the foreground and ND can create different effect for composition.

Reverse GND filter – 84dot5mm

84Dot5mm RGND 2 stops
–> 84Dot5mm RGND 2 stops

As previous discussion, Reverse GND or RGND is a filter very important for sunrise/sunset/dusk/dawn moment… I am officially bringing in another RGND brand 84dot5mm  ….

again let me share some new picture showing how;s the filter balance the exposure

-without Filter and meter on foreground. so the dusk moment sky is over exp

without Filter and meter on foreground

-without Filter and meter on sky. and now the foreground is under expose

– apply RGND 2 stops … without any HDR, exposure blending, shadow highlight recovery . both foreground and sky with right exposure and details now

Why Big Stopper …. and How ….

just another sample of Big Stopper use … the use of the ND filters can help to create different effect or mood of our pictures ….

many may ask how we going to use ND filters or Big Stopper as it is almost total dark ..

1. use GND/RGND or shoot like normal but capture the shutterspeed, ISO, F number… e.g below. but make sure set to Manual Focus after the capture or record of the setting

without Big Stopper
without Big Stopper

2. use the same ISO, Aperture  but then convert the shutter speed base on 10 stops filter exposure table, ‘long time’ (for Iphone user), ND Calc (for Android user)

e.g. ISO100 , F16 , 1/30s before ND1000 , Big Stopper…. will change to

ISO100, F16, 30s

– DO NOT change setting ISO, Aperture

– DO NOT change focus (after the MF)

with Lee Filter Big Stopper
with Lee Filter Big Stopper

3. few notes need to be taken

– white balance could be run, you may correct it with white balance tool at Photoshop, Lightroom, DPP … by click white color spot

– the light condition could be change e.g. sunset .. it will change to darker so need to compesate with some add on time … e.g. 30s above I normally add on 10-20% time for sky getting darker

– sturdy tripod need to be use avoid shake …

– long exposure noise need special process to remove (color noise) , if do not know any method turn on long exposure noise reduction

my Filter – GND .6s & RGND 2 stops | liewwk

it is not easy to tell how filter help us as landscape photographer … normally we face

1. either foreground correct exposure but the sky will be over or sky ok but foreground under

2. when light reach horizontal (sunset/sunrise last momet) … the center park of the light source use to over exposure with highlight blown …

and here is a simple picture show what filters I to get different results

filter or not .. and GND or RGND ????

– GND use up to the grass level

– RGND use up to the house

– meter on foreground grass

how I shoot Milky with smaller aperture len …

I always telling friends of mine to have bigger aperture to get clearer Milky way shot … and it really give impact with more light fall onto the sensor … but what if we do not have big aperture len .. e.g. we own F4 or F3.5 lenses ?

and I share this before .. How I shoot Milky Way/Star

theoritical , if we can increase the shutter time which allow more light abosrb on the sensor.. we should able to capture beautiful stars sky … but according to the rule 600

I had aiming a polarie star tracker but too bad, i had been turn down by the cost and size …

recently, I managed to test the

Vixen Polarie… a square box size small and weight <1kg … and not really difficult to operate …

i may not able to share how do use this .. but it is really simple and let me share the simple test result

both shoot at F4 , exp 151s +- , ISO 400

1. without start tracker – Vixen Polarie

2. witho start tracker – Vixen Polarie

with minimu setup time and minimu knowledge of Astronomy , I am able to create a image without “start trail” effect

**** rule 600 simply basic rule to avoid “star trail” effect while we have too long exposure on our effective focal length.. e.g.

16mm on FULL frame, we should have max exposure of 600/16=37.5s

16mm on canon APS-c , we should have max exposure of 600/16*1.6=23.4

so if we have anything more than the exposure time the the rotation of earth will create “star trai;” effect create blur effect on to our frame.

… ready to go … with Big Stopper

… face EAST … with Lee Filter Big Stopper

Some time we just need something slow … but smaller aperture and lower ISO .. but the speed still not low as what we want … then we need to make use of ND filter to slow down filter to create effect what we wish to have …

e.g.  of use Big Stopper to make shutter >30s or even >60s … to create the silky and clouds movement or we call slow shutter

i love this filter even it create blue cast which can easily correct  … I share some pictures before HERE

and this filters can be pre-order and I have constantly stock arrive … feel free to contact me …
