Should I use Camera Long Exposures Noise Reduction ?

Me and my gang have a short discussion last week whether should  we use the camera Long exposures noise reduction (NR) or not … as it normally produce hot pixel (red dots) after the long exposures shot especially involve a lot of dark area (black, dark grey ….). e.g. show below

Red dots appear … without the Long Exposure (LE) NR turn on camera body

But from my experience the noises and even the red dot can be reduce manually in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) noise reduction function …

here are few pictures capture

1. with LE NR turn on

2. no LE NR turn and no PP

2. no LE NR turn and with ACR NR

simple ACR Noise Reduction

a 100% crop of 3 pictures above

*** all the setting are the same and it look slight different due to the sky turning dark …

Canon 5dm2 + Canon 1635L

# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 79/1 second ===> 79 second
# Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 11/1 ===> ƒ/11
# ISO Speed Ratings = 200

based on the 3 pictures compare

– picture with LE NR turn on body require double exposure time
– less noise especially the “red dot”/hot pixel
– the one without any NR with more details
– simple NR on non LE NR picture can reduce more noise and all red-dot (hot pixel) disappear. Even less details compare to the LE NR turn on picture. But this sure can be fine tune by some masking the foreground or main object

So if you ask me, is it worth to spend double the time while shooting ? my answer is no while I can reduce the noise in PP … so I will safe more time to shoot and remove the noise later …..

  1. I never use it; I do any corrections in post processing. I may give it a try one of these days but I think it may take too long before another shot can be taken. In your examples it seems it gives good results.

  2. copy from your word ~ So if you ask me, is it worth to spend double the time while shooting ? my answer is no while I can reduce the noise in PP … so I will safe more time to shoot and remove the noise later …..

    i actually disagree with your statement, i has try long exposure photo but the result was disappointed coz “red dot”/hot pixel when it come to non structure photo that will easy to fix, problem come when that spot come to the photo structure that u get some problem to fix that, who care actually!….
    disavdantage
    -spent more time to fix
    -have to check every inch of your photo
    advantage
    may be u get double no count photo coz u save half time body camera process

    i know, golden time not much long for long exposure photo, it depend on individual it-self if u want better quality n less edit go for ON NR
    -or may be can try reduce the time exposure, eg: intent of 2 min (total 4 min)reduce to 1 min n 1 min body process(total 2 min)
    -at same time waiting body process, can go to next spot

    -i know your experience are a lot then my, but i just want to share what i experienced
    tq..

    1. thanks .. for the reply … for yours concern, while u turn on the LE NR it will reduce a lot of details which think can be edit in the raw NR.. which so far work well to me … provided you shoot with HIGH ISO + LE then it will going to be tough to be edit .. may be you have sample to share ? and send me the raw and I can try to edit for you ?
